Dental Implants – What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery

The entire procedure of replacing lost or damaged teeth with dental implants might take time. Common inquiries from patients who might benefit from the operation include what to expect before, during, and after the dental implant procedure, along with the recovery period and post-operative care. In this blog, we’ll address these questions and describe the steps involved in dental implant surgery.

Dental implant placement involves multiple steps, each with its own recovery period and safety considerations. Depending on the condition of your teeth and jawbone, as well as the number of implants required, each patient’s operation may be unique. Your implant dentist will discuss this with you. Read the blog to learn about the procedures and aftercare!

What to Expect before Dental Implant Surgery

If you are only using local anesthesia, eat a light meal.

  • Eat a light breakfast 1 to 2 hours before your appointment if your surgery will be performed under local anesthesia.
  • You must fast if you are under general anesthesia or sedation. Avoid eating or drinking for 6 to 8 hours beforehand; our staff will verify your particular fasting guidelines.

Medicines

  • If you’re getting dental implants, take any prescribed antibiotics or pre-medication as directed by your dentist.
  • Unless otherwise instructed, keep taking your prescribed medications.
  • If you take blood thinners or other medications that hinder healing, let us know well in advance. Your doctor or specialist may need to make any necessary adjustments.

Dental hygiene

  • To reduce your risk of infection, carefully brush and floss before your consultation.
  • Before surgery, you could be requested to rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash; we’ll let you know if this is necessary.

Health Updates

  • If you are unwell, have a cold or flu, or have any changes to your health status, please let us know.
  • Please let us know if you have any allergies, especially to drugs and anesthetics.
  • Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are getting an implant placed in the upper molar area, sinus pain is a concern.

No alcohol and no smoking

  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol for at least 24 hours before your operation. You would need to stop smoking 1-2 weeks before and after your dental implant procedure; smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure.
  • After the dental implant procedure, abstain from alcohol for two weeks.

What Happens during Dental Implant Surgery?

Dental implant surgery is usually done in stages, so that the jawbone has time to heal properly around the implant before the next step. The usual sequence of the dental implant procedure is:

  • If the tooth has not come out in some other way, remove the damaged tooth.
  • Prepare the jawbone for surgery, which may involve some bone grafting.
  • Once the jawbone heals, place the implant in the gumline.
  • Let the jaw heal again. Then the surgeon will install the abutment (the piece that screws into the implant) and screw the artificial tooth on top, completing the full implant.

This can take several months to give your jaw time to heal and be ready for the final implant placement. Patience is important because, without a strong jawbone, the implant may not integrate.

What to Expect after Dental Implant Surgery

Moderate Pain and Swelling

Mild pain, swelling, bruising, or slight bleeding around the implant site are common following dental implant surgery. These symptoms usually disappear after a few days. To ease discomfort and minimize swelling, your dentist could suggest cold compresses and pain medication.

Oral hygiene and eating

Select soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, soups, and scrambled eggs during the initial stages of recuperation.  Avoid meals that could irritate the surgical site, such as hard, crunchy, or extremely hot foods. To keep the implant site clean, practice good oral hygiene by brushing gently and rinsing as directed by your dentist.

Recovery and Healing

While full healing takes longer, the initial recovery usually takes a few days to a week. The implant gradually integrates with the jawbone over the following months. This provides a strong base for the replacement tooth.  During follow-up visits, your dentist will monitor your healing.

For Emergency

If you have persistent bleeding, increased swelling, fever, pus around the implant site, or severe or worsening discomfort, contact your dentist. These signs could indicate an infection or another issue that needs immediate attention.

Dental Implant Recovery and Healing

From initial healing to full integration with the jawbone, dental implant recovery is a multi-stage process. In the first few days, bruising, swelling, and pain are common and typically go away with proper care.  You can support healing by following your dentist’s advice, eating soft foods, and practicing gentle dental hygiene.

It usually takes a few months for the implant to fully integrate and become firmly fixed in the jawbone. Regular dental checkups help track healing and spot potential issues early. Avoid smoking and follow recommended aftercare guidelines to promote efficient healing and long-lasting dental implant results.

Dental Implant Aftercare Tips

Observe Your Dentist’s Instructions: Follow all post-surgery care instructions and take prescribed medications as directed.

Eat Soft Foods: Avoid hard, crunchy, or extremely hot foods; choose yogurt, mashed potatoes, soups, and scrambled eggs instead.

Keep Your Mouth Healthy: Use the recommended mouthwashes and gently brush the area around the implant.

Avoid Smoking: Smoking slows the healing process and increases the likelihood of implant failure.

Rest and Recover: For the first few days after surgery, avoid physically demanding activities.

Attend Follow-Up Appointments: Visit your dentist regularly to monitor healing and catch potential issues early.

When to Contact Your Dentist

After dental implant surgery, minor bruising, swelling, and soreness are common, but certain symptoms may point to problems that require medical attention. Contact your dentist if you experience severe or worsening pain that does not go away with recommended medication, prolonged bleeding, or swelling that worsens after the first few days. Unusual discharge, pus, or fever near the implant site could signal an infection and shouldn’t be ignored.

If the implant or temporary repair seems loose, visit a dentist. Responding promptly to these warning signs can help protect your dental implant’s long-term success, prevent problems, and support recovery.
